Leaner, Faster, Stronger: How Terra Wholefoods Achieved Operational Excellence with Lean Management and COLEAD
Our journey toward operational excellence, and what it means for every partner we supply
At Terra Wholefoods, our mission has always been to bring the untouched purity of Fiji’s volcanic turmeric to the global stage. However, as we scale to meet rising international demand, we recognize that "purity" must be matched by operational precision. To achieve this, we recently partnered with COLEAD under the Fit For Market Plus (FFM+) programme for a comprehensive Post-Training Support mission focused on Lean Management.
Why Lean Management?
The agriculture industry is uniquely sensitive to time and waste because produce is perishable. Lean Management is not just about cutting costs; it is a systematic approach to reducing "Muda" (waste)—those non-value-adding activities that slow down production and increase risk. For our B2B partners, our commitment to "Lean" means a more efficient supply chain, better quality control, and a faster "Forest to Pack" journey.
The Mission: Muda Hunting and Value Stream Mapping
Led by COLEAD expert Kennedy Okwany, our management and production teams underwent intensive coaching to identify the seven traditional wastes: motion, waiting, overproduction, defects, inventory, transportation, and underutilization of skills.
Key highlights of the mission included:
- Value Stream Mapping (VSM): We "walked the Gemba" (the production floor), mapping every second of our workflow.
- Muda Hunting: We identified subtle inefficiencies, such as the "muda of waiting" The Power of Data: The training introduced us to Takt Time—the rate at which we must complete a crate to perfectly meet customer demand.
Organizing for Success: The 5S Methodology
A major outcome of the training was the implementation of 5S workplace organization: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain.
- Sort & Set in Order: We zoned our Nadi facility to ensure that only necessary materials are in the processing area, reducing the risk of cross-contamination and accidents.
- Standardize: TWL PPE Checklist is a standardized work procedure to ensure that every team member, from receiving to mesh tagging, follows the same high-integrity protocols.
A Culture of Continuous Improvement
The most important lesson from our COLEAD training is that Lean is not a one-time event—it is a continuous improvement journey. We have now integrated "Daily Kaizen" (small, positive changes) into our leadership standard work.
By quantifying our efficiency we now have a clear baseline to improve upon. This transparency is what sets Terra Wholefoods apart. We aren't just selling turmeric; we are building a world-class, data-driven agribusiness that empowers 250+ local collectors while delivering a "clean-label" promise to our global clients.
